Mediation and Conflict Resolution

Your organization will be more effective if it addresses conflict positively and effectively.

Northwest Violence Prevention Solutions can help your organization become more effective by helping to evaluate and resolve conflict that may be limiting your organization's success.  While some level of conflict exists in every organization it is important to evaluate whether the conflict is at a level that is detracting from your organization.  There are five levels of conflict:

1.  Level One Conflict is a problem to solve.  It can be addressed by the parties and is essential for creativity and life.

2.  Level Two Conflict is a disagreement.  Not everyone agrees on the solution to a problem, but using good communication skills and trusting the decision-making system, parties can make a decision based on what is good for the relationship or organization.

3.  Level Three Conflict is a contest.  In this stage people are identified as being on certain sides.  The goal is not primarily the benefit of the relationship or organization, but winning the argument.  Voting is viewed as the "fair" way of deciding and compromise is less likely.

4.  Level Four Conflict is either win or leave scenario.  The goal is no longer just winning, it is to either have one's own way or quit the relationship or organization.  What began as a problem to solve now becomes about people and personalities.  The winners get to stay and the losers will seek a new relationship or organization.

5.  Level Five Conflict is punishment.  Not only do the winners get to make the final decision, there is some form of punishment applied to those who lose.  This can come in a variety of forms and is seldom resolved short of involving law enforcement.

Based on the levels of conflict present in your organization, mediation or conflict management may be appropriate:
